Financial Fraud Awareness
Stock market scams on social media, how to verify a Research Analyst, and how to report fraud.
CAUTION to INVESTORS: Stock Market Scams via Social Media Platforms
The rise of social media has changed how we connect and share information. However, some unscrupulous entities misuse these platforms to deceive investors in the securities market. They use various tactics to gain trust and lure unsuspecting individuals into fraudulent schemes.
Common Tactics Used by Scammers
1. Unsolicited Invitations: Sending random links to join WhatsApp groups (e.g., “VIP Groups” or “Free Trading Courses”) to attract potential victims.
2. Fake Profiles: Creating fraudulent profiles that portray them as stock market experts.
3. Impersonation: Pretending to be SEBI-registered intermediaries, well-known public figures, celebrities, or senior executives of reputed companies.
4. Fabricated Testimonials: Sharing false success stories and fake profit claims to convince investors to transfer money, promising unrealistic returns.
Investors are strongly advised to:
1. Avoid trusting unsolicited messages from unknown sources
2. Refrain from joining unverified WhatsApp groups or communities
3. Verify the identity of anyone offering investment advice or services
Guidelines for Investors & How to Verify a Research Analyst:
To protect yourself, follow these best practices to ensure you are dealing with a genuine SEBI-registered Research Analyst:
| Step | Action | Instructions |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Search the Name | Visit: SEBI RA List |
| 2 | Obtain Official Contact Details | Note the email address and phone number listed on the SEBI portal. |
| 3 | Communicate via Official Email | Contact the analyst only through the email provided on the SEBI website. |
| 4 | Confirm Identity | If the response comes from the same verified email, you are likely dealing with a genuine professional. |
| 5 | Verify Payment Details | Always confirm UPI IDs and payment mechanisms via SEBI Check and CeFCoM. |
| 6 | Stay Alert | If the person responds from a different email, refuses to share verified details, or avoids @valid UPI and CeFCoM, discontinue communication—they may be impersonators. |
